Take Your Loved One to the Doctor (TYLOD) is a culturally rooted, community-led campaign empowering Black men in Lauderhill and Overtown to take charge of their health - and support the well-being of those they love.
Originally launched nationally by radio personality Tom Joyner, TYLOD is now being activated locally with support from the Health Foundation of South Florida, as part of its Black Health Summit In Action initiative. The campaign uses trusted messengers, local leadership, and community-driven care to remove systemic barriers and reframe health as a shared value.

Why This Matters

Black men are among the least likely to access preventive care—yet face some of the highest risks for chronic disease and early death. These disparities aren’t just about personal choice—they’re rooted in historic inequities, lack of access, and mistrust of the medical system.
TYLOD meets men where they are—in barbershops, churches, and trusted community spaces—to shift the narrative and build a culture of wellness.
The facts are urgent:
9 Years
In Overtown, life expectancy is up to 9 years shorter than in nearby neighborhoods.
15.2%
In Lauderhill, 15.2% of residents are uninsured, with even higher rates among Black men.
2x
Black men are 2.1x more likely to die from prostate cancer than white men.
